Class D Driver's License

If you have a Class D driver’s license, then you are legally permitted and able to drive passenger cars. The Class D driver’s license is frequently referred to as the standard driving license that most people obtain soon after they learn to drive. Also, a Class D driver’s license allows you to drive trailers and towing vehicles as long as they weigh less than 10,000 pounds. Thus, you can also tow a trailer or boat legally.

By the way, what does D mean on a driver’s license? The D on a driver’s license is one of the most common categories and classifications. It only refers to the fact that those with a D driver’s license can drive passenger cars legally. And, it is a noncommercial automobile license, or a standard driver’s license. The D driver’s license is the same license that most people get and qualify for as teenagers. Most US states utilize the term D license to describe that the driver can use vehicles for basic, noncommercial use or non-motorcycle use.

Of course, a Class D driver’s license is different from a Class C driver’s license. The primary difference between a Class D driver’s license and a Class C driver’s license is that a Class D driver’s license is required to operate a passenger vehicle. And, a Class D driver’s license is a standard license, which is a non-commercial driver’s license. On the other hand, a Class C driver’s licenseis required to drive a vehicle which is specially designed to transport 16 or more passengers. And, a Class C driver’s license is considered a commercial license.

What Can a Class D Driver Drive?

Surely, each state has its own laws and regulations for the classification system of driver’s licenses. In several states, there may be only several types of driver’s licenses, whereas in other states, there may be up to nine different classifications. Thus, a Class D driver’s license allows drivers to drive and operate basic vehicles. This allows drivers to use their own vehicles for day to day use.

However, a class D driver cannot operate a motorcycle because a different license will need to be obtained. So, if you want to drive other vehicles such as motorcycles or commercial vehicles like buses, you need to get separate licenses with different classifications.

Most states permit Class D drivers to drive noncommercial vehicles as long as they are under a particular weight limit. For example, in many states, the weight limit must be under 26,000 pounds, whereas other states only permit up to 10,000 lbs or 16,000 lbs.

This is because there are some additional skills and tests required for the drivers to operate commercial vehicles such as buses, coaches, and 18 wheelers. The operators tend to be trained and highly skilled in their driving ability to get the suitable license to drive these commercial, larger vehicles.
