Standing on federal land in Leavenworth County, Kansas, the United States Penitentiary (USP) Leavenworth is often equated with the United States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB), a military facility located at army outpost Fort Leavenworth, whereas both are different and separate.
Even though there are so many other federal prisons in the United States with different security levels and functions, USP Leavenworth has become an important facility within the Bureau of Prisons. In fact, this facility served as the largest maximum-security federal prison from 1903 to 2005, until it was eventually downgraded to a medium-security facility due to its low level of violence.
The USP Leavenworth is designed to house inmates who pose a serious threat to society or have committed particularly heinous crimes, such as organized crime members, high-profile criminals, and political prisoners. That’s why the prison cells are made back-to-back in the center of the structure facing the wall (with walls 40 feet high), which aims to prevent any escape attempts.

To visit a USP Leavenworth inmate, you will need the register number. If the inmate’s register number at the fifth digit is an even number, you can visit him on even-numbered weekends throughout the month. If the inmate’s register number in the fifth digit is an odd number, you can visit them on the odd number of weekends throughout the month.
In this case, a weekend refers to Saturday and Sunday. And if a federal holiday falls on a Saturday and Sunday, the visiting rules regarding alternate weekends will apply. Well, inmates can only be visited by five people at a time, including children and adults.

- Wear a sleeveless shirt or sleeveless dress and outer clothes.
- Wear see-through or torn clothing, including factory-made.
- Wear shorts, skirts, or dresses with a slit that exceeds two (2) inches above the knee.
- Wear open-toed sandals or shoes.
- Wear khaki clothing that could be mistaken for inmate clothing.
- Wear clothes that would offend other people who might be present in the living room.
