Dress Code When Visiting an Inmate

As explained on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice site, here are the rules of dress code for visitors when visiting an inmate.

  • It is not permitted to wear clothes which are revealing, tight fitting, or made with see-through fabrics.
  • It is allowed to wear sleeveless shirts and dresses, but shoulders must be covered.
  • You are permitted to wear flip-flops, sandals, and open-toe shoes.
  • For children who are 10 years old or younger, there is no restriction in the length of their shorts.
  • Don’t wear clothes which have pictures or words that are offensive or profane.
  • If you wear skirts or shorts, make sure that they are not shorter than three inches above the middle of your knee while you are standing. It is also permitted to wear long pants or capri pants.

Those are some rules of dress code for visiting a TDCJ inmate. If you want to be permitted to visit your loved one, make sure that you obey the rules. And it is important for you to note that the duty warden will make the final decision whether your clothing is appropriate or not for visitation.

Some Other Things You Must Pay Attention When Visiting a TDCJ Inmate

Besides paying attention to your dress code, you also need to pay attention to some other things before doing an inmate visitation so that it will be a successful visit.

If it is possible, it is better for you to coordinate your visit with the inmate. It can be done by sending them a message first through the service used in the facility or contacting the unit. By coordinating, you will know when you can visit them. Also, note that depending on the visitation status of the inmate, in general most inmates are permitted to be visited by only two adult visitors per visit per weekend. How about the children 17 years old and under? They are not considered adults so that they can join with these two adults.

You have to verify the inmate’s unit of assignment. For your information, inmates can be moved from one place to another for some reasons. So, the thing that you are able to do here is to use the offender information search tool that you can find on the offender visitation page of the TDCJ website. There, you are able to verify the location of the inmate. In addition, in the offender information, you are also able to check whether the offender is eligible for being visited or not where it can be seen in the “Offender Visitation Eligible” section. If it says “Yes”, then the offender can be visited. You need to verify that you are an approved visitor and if you do not know whether you are an approved visitor or not, you are able to contact the unit.

Bringing proper identification is also needed. The forms of identification that are accepted are a driver license which is issued by a state, a Department of Public Safety ID card, an Armed Forces ID card, and a passport. The identification card like a visa border crossing ID card issued by the US Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services, showing an additional form of identification if it is questionable whether or not an ID is acceptable may be required such as a birth certificate, a credit card with a photo, or another official form of identification. For children who are 17 years old or younger, if their age is questionable because of their visible maturity, they may have to bring an ID such as a birth certificate, a DPS ID, or a student ID.
