Duties

There are a number of duties you should perform as a correctional teacher, here they are:

  • To apply the overall remedial reading, science, language arts, math curriculums and/or social studies.
  • To apply and maintain life skills, study strategy and other cognitive strategy programs.
  • To design new programs when necessary to meet special needs and place students into their respective prescribed programs.
  • To do an interview and evaluate all prospective special learning needs students.
  • To administer various individualized formal and informal diagnostic special education and literacy tests including pre/ post-tests.
  • To maintain and evaluate an accurate record of progress achieved by the students and redesign the program if necessary to meet individual needs.
  • Along with all other correctional institution employees, the incumbent will be charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. In this case, the staff correctional responsibilities will precede all others that are required by this position and will be performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

You definitely need to meet some basic qualification requirements to be considered for the position, here they are:

Basic Requirements

  • The candidate should earn the bachelor’s degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution which included or was supplemented by a supervised student teacher. Or,
  • The candidate needs to follow at least one course in each of the following areas: General psychology, Human development, History and/or philosophy of education and Teaching methods at the learning level of the position, i.e., elementary or secondary learning level.
  • For the secondary school teaching position, the candidate should also have had at least 24 semester hours or equivalent, of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction.
  • The candidate should meet the degree and course requirements that are shown above and also must have had at least 24 semester hours, of course work in special education which included at least one course that covers the teaching of exceptional students and courses in the proper field of specialization.

Education

  • GL-09: The candidate should attend two years of progressively, higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree or master’s or equivalent graduate degree.
  • GS-11: The candidate should attend three years of progressively, higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Experience

For GL-09 and GS-11, the candidate should:

  • Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to thb next lower grade level in federal service.

In order to be creditable, this experience should have equipped the applicant with the special qualifications to successfully do the duties of the position and should typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Here are the examples of the qualifying experience:

GL-09

  • Experience teaching special learning needs students in core subjects (such as GED, literacy and ESL programs) including adapting instructional materials and methods.
  • Experience in developing individualized lesson plans and modifying existing academic curricula to meet special learning needs.
  • Experience  in developing a record-keeping system to evaluate special learning needs students, and recommending adaptations to encourage successful progress through the identified course work.

GS-11:

  • Experience in designing, developing and applying various lessons, curricula and instructional materials based on knowledge of teaching strategies, assessment data and learning styles for special learning needs students.
  • Experience in developing, administering and analyzing various individualized formal and informal diagnostic special education and literacy tests, developing prescriptive educational programs and identifying deficiencies.
  • Experience  in designing a record-keeping system to evaluate special learning needs students, developing and applying adaptations and analyzing data presented to make sure student’s successful progress through coursework.
