ADX Florence is a federal prison with the highest-level security which holds the most dangerous criminals in the United States. The location of ADX is in Fremont County of Colorado and it is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. According to the Prison Pro, this prison has the ability to hold 490 inmates and there are 9 housing units surrounded by a secure fence, but according to Wikipedia it is designed for 474 inmates and it has never been at full capacity. Cells are soundproof so that inmates cannot communicate with each other when they are in the cells.
Have you heard that in ADX Florence there is Range 13? What is it actually? You are able to read about Range 13 ADX below.
Security Levels at ADX
In ADX Florence Prison, there are six different security levels including:
- General Population Units (“Delta”, “Echo”, “Fox”, and “Golf” Units
- Special Housing Unit (SHU)
- Special Security Unit (“H” Unit)
- Control Unit
- Intermediate/ Transitional Units (“Kilo” and “Joker” Units)
- Range 13
Each of the security levels above has its own purpose. For example, inmates who stay in the control unit are inmates who have committed serious conduct violations or acts of violence at other institutions. High level members of organizations are also housed there.
“H” Unit is a unit for inmates who are members of designated terror groups by the Department of Justice or inmates who have been given special administrative measures (SAM).
The Intermediate Units are for “step-down” inmates who are able to be moved to another institution if they still can be free from incident while they are housed in the unit.
How about Range 13? It is a special four-cell wing in the Special Housing Unit where it is aimed for inmates who need the tightest control in ADX.
According to Identiv, there are a lot of motion detectors, cameras, and 1,400 remote-controlled steel doors in ADX Florence Prison. For 24 hours a day, officers also monitor inmates in the prison’s control center. A “panic button” can be activated by the officers to close every door in the facility when there is an escape attempt.
What’s in Range 13?
Range 13 is one of the security levels in ADX Florence. According to 95 Rock, Range 13 is made up of four cells where the location is in H-Unit. It has a number of items such as a bed, a shower, and a toilet. There are no blind spots in the security camera range. The cell is soundproof and everything there is made of concrete. The cells have long windows which are small. Inmates who stay here will stay for 23 hours a day, alone. This prison is the most secure one and it is reserved for the worst of the worst.
On The Denver Post, it is explained that in the Range 13 unit, inmates cannot contact humans virtually and they are under camera supervision for 24 hours a day. Inmates in this unit have one non-legal phone call a month for 15 minutes.
