1200 Jail
This jail can be found at 1200 Baker Street. On January 23, 2003, the jail opened. The width of the building is 603,000 square feet. It has a parking garage that is 100,000 square feet. It also has the administrative offices of the Sheriff’s Department. In this jail, 96 beds for MHMRA, 124 beds for the Medical Division, and 4,156 regular beds are provided. An inmate classification center is also housed in the facility.
There are MHMRA examination/ interview rooms, counselling rooms, a recreation area, multi-purpose rooms, and triage rooms on every floor. In the fourth floor, it houses women while in the sixth floor, there is a law library and vocational rooms.
A dental facility, a large medical clinic, a pharmacy, an x-ray facility, mental health facilities, and an infirmary are available in the jail as well. In addition, a substance abuse program, New Choices, is also offered by the jail.
701 Jail
The location of this jail is at 701 North San Jacinto Street. In the United States, this jail is one of the largest detention center facilities. The jail has 7 floors and there are 4,144 inmate beds. In August 1991, the jail opened.
This jail is designated by the county as a “Direct Observation” facility where inmates are monitored by staff members for 24 hours every day. In 2002, this jail became the second largest American jail and the largest one was Los Angeles County Men’s Central Jail of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
1307 Jail
The location of this jail is at 1307 Baker Street where it is east of the 701 Jail. There are 1,070 inmate beds in the jail. This jail is designated by the county as a “Semi-Direct Observation” where inmates are monitored by the staff members in the dormitory area for 24 hours every day. In this jail, there is also a Farm Shop where it is a place for keeping stray livestock that is confiscated by the Sheriff.
Joe Kegans State Jail
This is a Texas state jail that usually houses inmates from Harris County that serve shorter term felonies. This jail is the only jail in the complex that is a state facility that is different from a county jail.
