Success can be achieved as long as you want to get up from failure. In psychology, the term used to call rising from failure is resilience. What is resilience in psychology? How do you develop it? Check out the following information to find out about everything.

Definition of Resilience

According to Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatte, resilience is the ability to respond healthily and productively when facing obstacles or trauma. The term resilience is from the Latin word “re-silere”, which means to go back or to bounce back.

Just like basketball, when it falls, resilience helps the ball to bounce back quickly. Try to imagine yourself as a basketball. When you are down, the one that helps you to get up again is resilience.

Resilience is such a useful ability to manage stress in everyday life. Reivich & Shatte state that individuals who are able to develop resilience skills well will be more successful in dealing with the issues in life that they are facing.

Aspects of Resilience

Resilience is influenced by a few factors. According to Reivich and Shatte (2002), resilience is formed from a total of seven aspects of an individual, including:

    1. Emotion Regulation

Emotion regulation refers to the ability to remain in a calm and controlled state even under stressful conditions. Basically, those who have this can control their emotions when tasting the failure, especially the negative ones.

    1. Impulse Control

Those who have high drive control will be able to regulate emotions easily. Self-ability to regulate impulses is important to keep behavior under control.

    1. Optimist

Optimism is the kind of feeling where you believe in yourself that things will change for the better. If you are optimistic, you believe that the future will be bright and that you can control the life you want it to be.

    1. Causal Analysis

Clausal analysis is the kind of ability to identify the causes of an event that is experienced. It is really important to prevent you from doing something wrong.

    1. Empathy

Empathy is described as the ability to feel or identify oneself in the same circumstances, feelings or thoughts as other people or other groups. This feeling is useful for you to be sensitive to what others feel and to minimize the risk of conflict.

    1. Self-Efficacy

Those with self-efficacy can solve issues and can achieve success. By having this in mind, you can be motivated to solve issues and believe that you can overcome it.

    1. Reaching Out

Those who are able to improve and achieve their goals will have a more positive aspect. Being afraid of becoming a failure because trying will get you nothing.

If you want to be a resilient person in facing challenges in life, you have to take note of these points. Practices make perfect, so do not worry if it feels hard at first.

Methods to Improve Resilience

It is worth noting that resilience is not a fixed aspect of a person. According to the conditions or situations that you face, the level can change. According to Reivich and Shatte, resilience levels can be improved and trained by adopting some habits and mindsets, as follows:

    1. Change the perception of failure

Keep in mind that failure is a common thing. It is part of the process of trying to achieve your goals. Try to change the perception of failure into more positive things so that you can be more mature. By doing so, you will be able to be more motivated and it is proven to be effective in preventing you from being down.

    1. Build confidence

Being confident is important for those who want to be resilient. By having confidence, you will believe that you will be successful in the future.

    1. Learn to relax

Dealing with challenges in life will be easier if you can take care of both your mind and body. Some of the things that you can do include trying to get enough sleep, exercise, meditation, and refreshing.

    1. Control self-response

Always remember that you are not the only one that has hard times. As a resilient person, you are suggested to face hard times by remaining calm and optimistic. Do not panic and think everything well.

    1. Be flexible

A resilient person is aware that things change, including the things that have been planned well.  However, it is easy to overcome it, which is by understanding the issue or by choosing another path.

These are the methods that you can try to improve resilience. Once you manage to get up, you will get through the stage called post-traumatic growth, which is also more known as Antifragility.

In conclusion, it is normal in life if there are ups and downs. Do not feel bad if you always face the thing without resilience as it is normal. Remember that not everyone can learn resilience. At least, you know a bit about it now.
