How to Check USCIS Case Status

Posted by

After applying for an immigration application such as a green card, citizenship, a work permit, or another immigration benefit with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you may need to check the status of your application to know how far it has progressed.

Thankfully! USCIS allows everyone who works with them easy access to track their immigration case information, applications, and forms, including the case status of their application. If you happen to check it, you can find the guide to do so through our post. Here you go!

Checking on the Case Status of Your USCIS Application: Here’s How!

It’s pretty straightforward to check the status of your application with USCIS. There are some methods to do so. So, you can only select which method is faster from the following options:

Method 1: Via the Case Status Online Tool

We think this is the simplest and most practical method since you can verify the status of your USCIS application online, which you can do from home or the office, even on your cell phone. You can only access the USCIS case status online tool that can be directly accessed via the official USCIS website.

Here’s how!

  • Go to the USCIS case status online tool here. https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do
    Check USCIS Case Status
  • Once there, you need to enter your case receipt number, a unique 13-character identifier that you can get from USCIS after they receive your application.
  • When entering your receipt number, you don’t include any hyphens or dashes (“-“), but you can instead include any other special characters like asterisks (“*”).
  • Then, click “Check Status.”
  • The next page will show you the last action taken on your case, and if it’s an application, it will also let you know the next steps.

Okay, that’s how to check on the status of your application via the USCIS case status online tool. Then, if you want to check another case’s status, you just enter a new receipt number in the “Enter Another Receipt Number” bar.

Method 2: Via Your USCIS Account

You can also try another online method to check on the status of your application by logging into your USCIS account. To do so, you’ll need to create an account first here. https://myaccount.uscis.gov/users/sign_up Make sure to follow the on-screen instructions until you successfully create your USCIS account.

Now, you can log into your USCIS account using your credentials. Once logged in, you can go to the “My Account” drop-down menu. Then, choose the application or form you’ve submitted that you want to track.

The following page will show your case’s current status and typical USCIS processing times for your case. In addition, if your USCIS account has been personalized, you may receive your most recent case updates, such as simplified case management, up to the last five actions on your case, and access to your electronically filed applications.

Method 3: By Phone Number

This method is recommended for those of you who have checked on the status of your application online before but got nothing. However, making a call to the USCIS Contact Center could be long due to wait times. But if you really need to speak with them, you can make a phone call at 1-800-375-5283.

Luckily, if you have a speech impairment or are hard of hearing, you can call them at TTY 1-800-767-1833. And, for those of you who are outside of the United States, you can dial 212-620-3418.

Method 4: By Mail

This is the slowest method you can use to check on the status of your application. It really needs to be taken if the online method cannot solve your problem. To track the status of your application, you may need to register for a USCIS account first, which will provide you with case updates.

If you select this method, you may need to send an inquiry letter to the USCIS field office where you have filed your application. You should include the following in your email:

  • Your full name
  • Your birthdate
  • Your A-Number
  • Your Application Filing Date
  • Your Receipt Number

You can also include a photocopy of your receipt notice, which contains your receipt number, with your inquiry letter. However, it will speed up the process of checking your case status. After you’ve sent your mail, you may need to check your physical mailbox regularly.

Method 5: In-Person Visit

Last, you can choose to visit the USCIS office in person by making a schedule first. This method is needed for those of you who cannot be provided by an online tool or email, for example:

  • If you applied for citizenship and need proof of your immigration status to work or travel.
  • If you need emergency travel documents.

To request an appointment, you can first contact the USCIS Call Center at  800-375-5283. Then, you can find a USCIS field office by reading the guide of Field Office Locator.

Well, those are some methods you can use to check on the status of your application with USCIS.
