Darrington Unit or currently called Memorial Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice men’s prison. It was known as the Darrington Unit until 2021 and now its name is the Memorial Unit. History of Darrington Unit

In the 1830s and 1840s, the area of Darrington Unit was a land that set a plantation owned by John Darrington of Alabama. There, cotton and sugarcane were picked by slaves. Even though Darrington did not live there and even after the land was bought by another owner, the name Darrington Plantation was stuck. When the state of Texas opened the prison, they kept the name and named it as the Darrington Unit where the prison opened in 1917. In the late 1980s, there were a lot of leaders of prison gangs who were housed in this unit.

Darrington Unit

In January 2021, the Texas Board of Criminal Justice was asked by State Representative James White, chair of the Texas House Committee on Corrections, to change the name of the Darrington Unit and two other Texas prisons because the names had association with slavery or convict leasing. And then, the name of the unit was changed to the Memorial Unit to respect the agency’s deceased employees.

Details of Darrington Unit

Bridgette Hayes is the Senior Warden of the unit. According to the TDCJ site, the total employees of this unit is 567 employees. There are 449 security employees, 81 non-security employees, and 9 Windham education employees. Besides, there are also 23 contract medical employees and 5 mental health employees.

Darrington Unit is a male prison and the capacity of the unit is 1,610. The custody levels consist of G1-G5, Security Detention, and Transient. The acreage is around 6,770 acres.

It has agricultural operations including edible and field crops, cow/calf operation, farm shop, egg laying/ washing/ packaging operations, security pack canines, security horses, cold storage facility, grain storage, and swine finishing operation. It also has manufacturing and logistics operations namely tire retreading facility and additional operations namely Windham Southern Region Administrative Office and Narcotic Canines.

This unit has medical capabilities including ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health services where the medical care is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also provides Regional Digital Medical Services (DMS), CPAP accommodating housing, and electronic specialty clinics.

How about the educational programs in the Darrington Unit or the Memorial Unit? It provides Special Education, Literacy (Adult Basic Education/ GED), Cognitive Intervention, and CHANGES/ Pre-Release. Career and Technology Programs are also available including Ventilation, Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration and there is also Automotive Specialization (Air Conditioning).

Chaplaincy Services, Adult Education Program (upon availability), Faith-Based Dormitory, Community Tours, Peer Education, GO Kids Initiative, Reentry Planning, and The Heart of Texas Foundation College of Ministry are offered as additional programs or services in this unit.

Community Work Projects are also offered including Habitat for Humanity, services provided to city and county agencies, the area food bank, and Texas Parks and Wildlife.
