Darrington Unit or currently called Memorial Unit is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice men’s prison. It was known as the Darrington Unit until 2021 and now its name is the Memorial Unit. Where is it located? Why was the name changed? You are able to read the information about Darrington Unit here.
History of Darrington Unit
In the 1830s and 1840s, the area of Darrington Unit was a land that set a plantation owned by John Darrington of Alabama. There, cotton and sugarcane were picked by slaves. Even though Darrington did not live there and even after the land was bought by another owner, the name Darrington Plantation was stuck. When the state of Texas opened the prison, they kept the name and named it as the Darrington Unit where the prison opened in 1917. In the late 1980s, there were a lot of leaders of prison gangs who were housed in this unit.
In January 2021, the Texas Board of Criminal Justice was asked by State Representative James White, chair of the Texas House Committee on Corrections, to change the name of the Darrington Unit and two other Texas prisons because the names had association with slavery or convict leasing. And then, the name of the unit was changed to the Memorial Unit to respect the agency’s deceased employees.
