What is the Class of Admission on Form I-130?
Part 2, Item 40.a., is the section that requires you to fill out your Class of Admission code when filling out the Form I-130 for your relatives. In this section, Class of Admission refers to the category of your visa that was used to permit an immigrant to be a permanent American resident or a conditional permanent resident.
The Class of Admission code is very important since the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will ask for it when you fill out an application. The Form 1-90, the green card renewal form, is the most common one. When filling out the application, you definitely need to put in the three-character code.
However, you always have to know your Class of Admission to keep your green card up-to-date, especially if you remain a permanent resident of the United States. If you use the incorrect Class of Admission code, it might cause the USCIS to misclassify you or even still consider you a non-immigrant.
Where to Find Your Class of Admission?
To find your Class of Admission code, you can see it on your green cards; it is located on the front side of your card under “Category.” The Class of Admission code is usually one or two letters that are followed by a number, e.g., IR2.
It’s important to note that the location of the Class of Admission code on the green card has changed over time. Of course, your Class of Admission may be located on the backside of older cards.

- If you didn’t enter the United States with an immigrant visa, you can find your Class of Admission in your I-94 record, which tells you how long you can stay in the United States legally. You can really find a copy of your I-94 record by simply going to the Customs and Border Patrol website and requesting one.
- If you’ve adjusted your status to permanent resident while you’re already in the United States, you can easily find your Class of Admission on the I-485 approval notice.
