What Are the 6 Points of ID Examples to Get a New Jersey’s Driver License?
It is known that New Jersey uses the “6 Points of ID” framework, where each frame is granted a certain number of driving license points. Under the requirements of the state’s code, you should provide several documents to verify your identity, and each document is worth a certain number of points.
The points range in worth from one to four points. Interestingly! You can really use two of them at a time. To pass the 6 points of ID, you must provide your identity through the following documents:
1. Primary Documents
Primary documents are the basic ID requirements you should meet. The primary documents are worth two to four points. Here are the examples of primary documents that are worth four points to pass the 6 points of ID requirements:
- A US birth certificate or certified copy must be submitted to a state office of vital statistics in the individual’s state of birth.
- US adaptation papers
- Original birth certificate from any country
- US passport or passport card
- Passport from the applicant’s country of citizenship issued by a foreign government
- A valid driver’s license from the state of New Jersey, including a probationary license
- current New Jersey non-driver ID card.
- Certificate of naturalization
- Certificate of citizenship
- Valid US military photo identification card
- A valid driver’s license photo issued by a country other than the US that should be provided with another government-issued document.
- Permanent resident card
- ID card issued by the national government or a consulate

3. Applicant’s Residency

- Property tax bill, statement, receipt, or any letter received from the IRS or state tax office within the past year
- Original unexpired lease with name of applicant as renter
- Savings or checking account statement from a bank or credit union issued within the last sixty days
- For applicants under 18, a statement from a parent or guardian must certify the applicant’s address.

4. Proof of SSN or ITIN

- Your Social Security Card (original paper, no copies)
- W-2 form issued within the past year
- Pay stub issued within the past year
- SSA-1099 form that was issued within the past year
- Non-SSA-1099 form issued within the past year
If you want to prove your individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN), you have to submit one of the following:
- Official documents received from the IRS or the New Jersey Division of Taxation showing the applicant’s name and ITIN
- New Jersey tax refund that displays an ITIN.
